Makaibari tea estate is located in the scenic Kurseong valley of Darjeeling and is one of the oldest and first to construct a factory in the region. It is a family-owned tea estate that has passed through four generations of ownership.

The status of Makaibari has changed dramatically. As a result, the concept of organic cultivation gained traction, and it later became a prominent feature of Makaibari's tea processing. Nearly 700 people work to produce one of the world's finest tea kinds using traditional methods. The Makaibari tea estate is divided into a multi-tiered arrangement of plants and trees, all snuggled coyly like a sub-tropical rain forest.

'Makaibari' literally translates to Corn Field: "Makai" means corn and "Bari" means field. The transformation of a cornfield into a Tea Garden. Makaibari, founded in 1859, was the world's first tea factory. Makaibari was the first tea and tropical agriculture garden to be certified Organic, Fairtrade, and Biodynamic; it was the first garden to be certified Organic, Fairtrade, and Demeter in 1993. The philosophy that most of Makaibari's Corporate Social Responsibility agenda activities are inspired by is "Partnership, not Ownership."
